Africa is a continent with a high number of armed conflicts. United Nations, regional organizations, and a number of non African states have tried to manage these conflicts. In 2001, the African states decided to establish the African Union as a successor of the Organization of African Unity. Since its establishment the African Union has made a significant effort to become an active player in conflict resolution of African conflicts. This paper looks into the build-up of capability within the African Union to conduct peace support operations. The African Union faces a number of organizational, decision making, and military challenges as well as providing adequate funds to resource build-up and expansion. This project analyzes the prospects of meeting these challenges. Finally, policy prescriptions for future policies to meet the challenges are provided.
